My Firstborn Furry Son
I am thrilled to be a part of Suburban Mum’s Behind the Lens series this week!
Maria of the Suburban Mum family and lifestyle blog began this series to feature fellow writers who have a story to tell through their photos. I pondered over the scads of photos I have taken since the tiny feet came running into my life. Eventually I decided to dedicate this guest post to my “firstborn,” our cherished 9-year-old European Burmese named Andy. My children are the topic in the vast majority of my writing. This article about our Andy, too often overlooked in my work, is dedicated to him and the meaningful role he has in our family.
Several of my friends who had experienced motherhood before me shared the same sentiment: pets are automatically “demoted” once children enter our lives. Apparently, this is a rite of passage for most women. Their beloved furry children become less important, less essential in their lives when there are tiny humans who depend on them for their very survival.
As for me, they could not have been more wrong.
